What is a Rodent?

Rodents, such as rats and mice, are small mammals known for their gnawing habits and rapid reproduction rates. They are considered pests primarily due to their ability to damage property and transmit diseases. Rodents often chew through wires, insulation, and packaging, causing significant structural damage and fire hazards.

Their droppings can contaminate food and surfaces, posing health risks to humans through diseases like salmonella. Their adaptability to various environments and quick breeding cycles make them challenging to control once they infest homes and businesses, requiring the need for effective pest management strategies.

Where are Rodents Found?

Rats and mice are commonly found in areas that provide easy access to food, water, and shelter. These include sewers, garbage dumps, and building basements. They often infest restaurants, warehouses, and residential areas where food waste is plentiful.

Rats can burrow into the ground near buildings, while mice tend to nest inside walls, attics, and cupboards. Both species thrive in areas with poor sanitation or clutter, such as alleys and abandoned buildings. Their ability to squeeze through small spaces allows them to exploit gaps in infrastructure, making infestations particularly challenging to control once they take hold.

How To Identify a Rodent

Rodents are small mammals, often brown to grey in colour. Rats are typically larger with a thick, robust body measuring up to 30cm, whereas mice typically measure up to 10cm and are more slender.
